After the nightmare of having a tooth removed last week, I had to go back into the dentist again today for a check up on the procedure, and to create the mould for the temporary denture I’m going to have to have for a month or two.
When I spoke to my dentist about it again today, he gave me three things I could do, other than just the initial option of a bridge that we spoke about last week.
1 - Make the denture a permanent thing - ahh, no thanks.
2 - Have a bridge fitted - Which would mean damaging the molar behind it. Not ideal.
3 - Having an implant fitted to replace the tooth. - EXPENSIVE AS HELL
I’d already ruled out option 1. I really didn’t want to have to deal with a denture, hell I’m not even 30 so I wasn’t going down that road.
Which left options 2 or 3.
Option 2 was from his point of view the worst option. Simply because you have to cut the tooth behind to fix the bridge too. This basically reduces the life span of the other tooth by about 90%
Option 3, again from his point of view, was the best option. The new tooth would not be adding any strain on those around it, and it would be firmly in place in the jaw bone making it just as strong as my other teeth. Then of course there was how much money this would make the practice. It comes in at a whopping £2500 for one dental implant. Yep you read that correctly, £2500 per tooth.
What to do, what to do? It’s not an easy decision. Obviously the preferred option is the implant. It’s much less damaging to the other teeth, but fantastically damaging to the bank balance. The bridge, while causing extra strain, is financially manageable, especially since the dental plan I’m on would take some of the hit with it, which it wouldn’t do with the implant.
So what have I decided to do……. For those of you who know me, the answer is an obvious one.
I have time to change my mind, but I think I’m going with the dental implant. It’s more expensive, but it means that I don’t damage any other teeth, and it will be a great deal stronger, and last a lot longer. I now just have to come up with some way to pay for the thing.
It’s something I really could have done without, but hopefully I won’t have to pay for any other dental treatments for a long damn time.
